Shreyas Iyer's Test Debut Delayed: Experts Weigh In on India's Batting Lineup
Despite a string of impressive performances across all formats, Shreyas Iyer's inclusion in the Indian Test squad remains uncertain. Former Indian opener Aakash Chopra believes the 30-year-old will have to bide his time, citing a crowded field of contenders.

While Iyer shone brightly in India's triumphant ICC Champions Trophy 2025 campaign and enjoyed a remarkable run in both the IPL and domestic red-ball circuit, Chopra emphasizes the stiff competition for Test spots.
"Shreyas Iyer won’t get a chance now. Many others haven’t gotten a chance either," Chopra stated on his YouTube channel. He highlighted the prolonged wait for players like Karun Nair, the still-awaiting Sarfaraz Khan, and the presence of Dhruv Jurel on the sidelines. "If he cannot even get among those who are in the waiting line, then how can he be considered for selection?" he questioned.
Iyer's recent form has undoubtedly been stellar. In the 2024–25 Ranji Trophy, he amassed 480 runs in just seven innings, boasting an impressive average of 68.57 and a strike rate exceeding 90. He carried this momentum into the IPL, where he scored 604 runs in 17 matches, leading Punjab Kings to their first final in nine years.
Despite these accomplishments, Chopra maintains that patience is key for Iyer to earn a Test call-up. "I know he had a good first-class season. He had a good IPL, took Punjab Kings to the final, did well in white-ball cricket — but his time will come in Tests. He will have to wait just a little bit."
Meanwhile, Sarfaraz Khan continues to make a strong case for himself. Following three half-centuries and a score of 150 in six Tests, he showcased his talent with a knock of 92 for India A against England Lions, followed by a century in an intra-squad match preceding the England series.
