Formula One could go back to using louder V8 engines with fully sustainable fuel by 2029 at the earliest, according to FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem.

F1 Could Roar Again with V8 Engines by 2029

Formula One enthusiasts may soon hear the familiar roar of V8 engines once more. According to FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem, the sport is considering a return to these engines, powered by fully sustainable fuel, as early as 2029.

While Formula One is gearing up for a new engine era next season, the governing body's president hinted in February at the possibility of revisiting naturally-aspirated V8s or V10s in the future.

The V8 engines were last seen in 2013, before the introduction of the current 1.6 litre V6 units.

"The current engine is so complicated, you have no idea, and it is costly," Ben Sulayem told reporters at the British Grand Prix.

He further added, "R&D [research and development] is reaching $200 million, and the engine is costing approximately $1.8m to $2.1m, so if we go with a straight V8, let's see."

Ben Sulayem emphasized the commercial appeal of V8 engines, noting that many manufacturers already produce them. He also pointed out the potential weight advantages and the anticipated positive reception from both long-time fans and newcomers due to the distinctive sound.

"To us, the V8 is happening. With the teams now, I'm very optimistic, happy about it. FOM [Formula One Management] are supportive, the teams are realising it is the right way," he stated.

He estimates a three-year development period, targeting 2029 for the potential return. He also acknowledged the high cost of fuel and transmissions, highlighting the need for careful consideration.

Ben Sulayem also addressed the possibility of a Chinese team joining the grid, filling the 12th slot. He reiterated his belief that Formula One needs more teams, emphasizing that any new entrant must bring value to the sport.

"The time will come when we feel it is right to open an expression of interest," he said regarding the 12th slot.

"We are not here to upset other teams. It won't be just go and do it for the sake of doing it. It has to be worth it for us. The team has to add value to sustaining the business of Formula One."

General Motors' Cadillac brand is set to become the 11th team next season, securing its place after initial resistance from existing teams and Formula One management.
