Gill’s post came shortly after his return to India’s T20I squad was confirmed. The opener last featured in the format over a year ago, against Sri Lanka in Kandy. His recall follows a strong campaign as captain in the five-Test series against England, where India drew 2-2.
The Punjab batter has often been questioned about his place in T20 cricket, but his elevation to vice-captain under Suryakumar Yadav signals the selectors’ trust. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar underlined Gill’s leadership credentials while announcing the squad. “In both T20 cricket (IPL) and Test cricket Gill is already leading. He was also the vice-captain the last time he played in T20Is. We do see leadership qualities in him, and he showed his quality by exceeding expectations with the bat in England,” Agarkar said.
